What is MyFitnessPal?

MyFitnessPal started out in 2005 and was running for around 10 years before being bought out by Underarmour for almost $500 million. It functions primarily as a meal tracker, allowing you to count calories with unparalleled detail. Co-founder Mike Lee created the app because he and his wife were preparing for a beach wedding and needed to lose weight, so he created an app with nutritional values of the food he was eating.

3 reasons to try my Fitness Pal

We recently conducted a survey on women and fitness in the UAE. We set out to determine women’s current outlook on fitness and what factors influence whether women feel they are moving towards or away from a more active and fit lifestyle. It has been a very interesting process of discovery, one of the surprises we turned up was the impact that MyFitnessPal has on habits and on lifestyle, for example, when answering the question whether or not they were more active now than 3 years ago, on average 27% more women using MyFitnessPal felt they were more fit today than 3 years ago.

It is quite surprising that just over one third of the women surveyed did not have any fitness apps on their smartphones at all, but this shows the opportunity there is for a lot more women to unlock the potential benefits apps like MyFitnessPal can bring.

What other results did the survey turn up?

Well firstly lets have a look at what fitness-related apps the women who responded to our survey are using:

Survey Responses on Fitness Apps

It is quite surprising that just over one third of the women surveyed did not have any fitness apps on their smartphones at all, but this shows the opportunity there is for a lot more women to unlock the potential benefits apps like MyFitnessPal can bring.

Part of our survey was about lifestyle and habits, one of the questions we asked women in the UAE was how many times a week they engage in a fitness activity, this can be anything from walking and swimming to going to the gym or yoga. The answers to this question helps provide insight into the potential benefits that MyFitnessPal has had for women, but first lets have a look at what ALL the respondents replied:

When we look at ALL the women that we surveyed, we find that 53% of them engage in a fitness activity 3 times or more each week, around 13% do not engage in exercise at all and 17% only engage in a fitness activity once a week.

When we look at the responses from women who are using MyFitnessPal, there are some stark contrasts:

As you can see, there is a huge increase in the proportion of women who engage in
a fitness activity 3 times or more a week. There might be quite a few reasons for this but the underlying factor is the accountability that comes with keeping a super detailed and comprehensive food diary that breaks down nutritional values as well as exercise and fitness activities.
